American Industry during World War II
Even before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States had begun to shift toward building military equipment. By late 1940, the Army-Navy Munitions Board was signing contracts with manufacturers to make equipment such as ships, aircraft, and vehicles. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor occurred, orders for war materials began to flood in for companies to fill. One of the largest manufacturers of materials was the automobile industry which used its assembly lines to produce vehicles such as jeeps and supply trucks. In addition to this, it produced equipment such as rifles, mines, artillery, and helmets. The United States supplied a majority of the Allied armaments during World War II.
