"Remember Pearl Harbor"
On December 7, 1941, the American Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Japanese forces took America by surprise and were able to launch a successful attack on what was known as "Battleship Row." The Japanese attacked in two waves. For two long hours, Pearl Harbor was bombarded by Japanese bombs and the American forces paid a heavy price.
- Over 2,350 Americans were killed in Pearl Harbor
- All 8 battleships of the U.S. Pacific Fleet were sunk or badly damaged - including the U.S.S. Arizona.
- All of America's aircraft carriers were unaffected.
U.S.S. Arizona
The U.S.S. Arizona is only one of the eight battlehships that had been in the attack of Pearl Harbor on December 7. It, however, serves as a memorial to those lives lost in the attack on Pearl Harbor. The U.S.S. Arizona was left where it had been sunk, a watery grave for 1,777 crewmen.The U.S.S. Arizona commemorates all those who lost their lives to the attack on Pearl Harbor and is still a symbol of "initial defeat and ultimate victory"
Results of Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor took countless lives and took America by surprise. One day after the attack on December 8, 1941, the people of America, shocked and horrified from the attack, gathered around their radios to listen as President Roosevelt delivered his "Day of Infamy" Speech. On December 11, 1941, Congress declared war against Japan, officially entering the United States into World War II. American women and men prepared for war with a new sense of patriotism and the slogan of "Remember Pearl Harbor" always in mind.
