Operation Market Garden(September 1944)
Belgium
On September 17, 1944 thousands of paratroopers descended from the sky behind enemy lines. It should have ended the war in time for Christmas 1944. Market was the code name for the airborne actions and Garden was
the code name for the ground troops.
Their goal was to secure the bridges across the rivers in Holland so that the Allied army could advance northwards and turn into the lowlands of Germany. Arnhem was a good target because it made it easy to assualt the Ruhr from here.
